‘Hand soap. For some reason whenever we went anywhere, restaurants, people’s houses, wherever, the first thing I had to see was what hand soap was available in the bathroom. No idea what that was all about. I wasn’t judging based on what soap they had, I just needed to know.’

‘The BMW badge. I’ve no idea why because I wasn’t into cars, didn’t even associate them as good cars or premium cars but I was just fascinated by the badge for some weird reason.’

‘As a little child I was obsessed with Countdown and wanted to be Carol Vorderman. I used to play pretend that I was Carol hosting various things like cooking and nature shows, nothing to do with spelling or maths.
‘I’m still damn good at Countdown.’

‘Some kids had comfort blankets, or teddy bears. Not this guy. I had a plastic Heinz bean tin from a play set. I would take it everywhere until I was about 5. There are photos of me on various holidays or doing various things, always with my trusty bean tin.’

‘I was fucking obsessed with limousines. Nothing was ever as thrilling as seeing a limo drive past in person, even the black ones that are used in funeral processions. My parents hired one for the afternoon for my 10th birthday and it was one of the best days of my life!’

‘I used to have a very intense, obsessive fixation on fire extinguishers. It lasted for years. The sad part is, I know very little about fire extinguishers.
‘I’m not sure what drew me to them, but I used to get a rush of joy and satisfaction whenever I laid eyes on one. (Yes, I was diagnosed with autism).’

‘It’s lasted into adulthood, but the Shipping Forecast. Classmates used to wake their parents up at sleepovers because I was talking gibberish while tossing and turning, but it was just random phrases like “Faroe Isle! 1000 miles! 11 72 rising” and they thought I was having a seizure.’

‘The Torvill and Dean comeback of 1994. Full-on scrapbook full of newspaper clippings, I knew the scoring elements and was incensed when they were robbed of the gold by poor judging in Lillehammer. I had never been ice skating in my life and had no desire to ever do so. Kids are quite odd.’
