Entertainment Saturday Night Live takedowns

Ania Magliano won the battle of the SNLs with a hilariously NSFW one-two knockout against last week’s Shane Gillis debacle

The trope that Saturday Night Live ‘used to be good’ has been around since the 70s, like the show itself, and a lot of the jokes.

Last week’s episode featured an attitude straight out of the 70s, too, when comedian Shane Gillis decided to go full Mary Whitehouse on the clothes women wear to the gym.

Here he is, auditioning for the comedy circuit Taliban.

“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t realise women just dressed like whores now.”

To be clear – Mary Whitehouse would have said ‘street-walkers’ or some such thing in her own bigoted rant, but the message would have been the same, and Gillis was dragged right across social media.

Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy beautifully explained the problem.

SNL UK had a pop at Gillis on two fronts – the sad little gym comment, and the fact that SNL will be fined and the comedian had to apologise, because he’d accidentally blurted out the word ‘fuck’ during another part of the late-night live broadcast.

It’s as NSFW as it gets – and that’s the point.

That’s how it’s done.

Ania Magliano’s savagely crisp takedown got a well-deserved round of applause.
