People were bemused why Virgin Trains insulted this member of the public in a bizarre Twitter spat

In a move that frankly baffles us, the social media account @Virgin_TrainsEC which represents the “Virgin Trains East Coast team” have called a member of a the public “basic”.

Here’s the exchange in full:

This started when journalist Josh Barrie complained that the new train that Virgin has launched, called the “Azuma” is a bit, well basic, and out of the blue got a reply from an official Virgin Trains account which we can only describe as snotty.

@joshbythesea New Virgin trains look pretty basic IMO

@Virgin_TrainsEC I think you look pretty basic Josh…IMO ^MS

@joshbythesea you what mate?

@Virgin_TrainsEC Yeah…you heard me. ^MS

We’re genuinely baffled. Is insulting members of the public good marketing?

Is it just some kid they’ve left with the account who’s trolling for kicks?

Are Virgin Trains genuinely hurt that someone doesn’t like their new trainy-wainy?

If you’re wondering what this train looks like then wonder no more:

Make up your own mind if it’s “basic” or not.

UPDATE

In an unlikely post-script, it appears the SAME person on the Virgin Trains East Coast team was behind the tweet that caused the company’s latest controversy.

This one.
