‘What was a core rule of ‘Old Internet’ etiquette that is completely dead now?’ – 17 bygone ways of being online

10.

‘Asking for a source was standard. Burden of proof was on the person making the claim. Now people get pissed when challenged and jump to deflections like “do your own research.”’

‘Make sure the website can be viewed as text friendly for people with devices that can’t handle pictures.’

‘The Internet is for information sharing, not for commerce.’

‘We used to lurk before posting. Meaning: learn the tone, the history, the unspoken hierarchies — respect the invisible culture before speaking.

‘Now, the internet is just an open mic with everyone screaming their biography. The tragedy isn’t rudeness — it’s the loss of apprenticeship. We no longer learn by watching; we perform by default.’

‘I think the big one is email addresses. It was a very big no no to have any kind of identifying information as an email address. Now, most emails have your real name in them.

‘Though, back when I worked at GS, you would still see a few winners.’

‘Back in the days, there was this “finger” command on Unix systems at my college, that would provide the real life name and either home or most often work address of the person involved. It even had information about how long ago this user was logged in. So we had access to real names of random people from the net, and did nothing about it. It was no big deal. Most of the people on the net back then were either scientists or students. Some servers or usenet groups had these documents called Netiquette, to which we mostly adhered. Trolls were dealt with swiftly. Unthinkable nowadays when many people on the net have the brain power of a chimpanzee.’

‘Courtesy-liking a post bc you commented on it’

‘Anti-etiquette, I guess, but there used to be a big thing about posting “first!” as the first comments, which was super annoying because (1) who cares, and (2) you’d end up with a dozen hopeful “first!” posts crapping up the start of any thread. It was a huge mod annoyance back then, but I haven’t seen it in years, even in places with chronological comments.’
