‘Tabasco. I’ve loved hot sauces for a long time but just recently I tried Tabasco again which I hated for being too vinegary. Turns out it’s amazing on fish.’

‘Cauliflower cheese. Couldn’t stand it when I was a kid. I had Sunday dinner at someone’s house and they put some on so I was obviously too awkward to say anything so I ate it. Fuck me it was good.’

‘Grand Designs. My parents watched it and I though it was dull as fuck but now in my 20s I’m obsessed with it.’

‘Mince pies. I wouldn’t go near them until I was in my late 40’s. Think I was 85% mince pie last Christmas.’

‘History and geography. I used to hate those topics as a kid but now I watch YouTube videos on those topics all the time and it’s fascinating!’

‘Gin! I remember trying a G&T when I was a teen and it tasted rough and I couldn’t understand why my mum was drinking it. Then somewhere around my late 20s I rediscovered it starting off with the flavoured gin liquors before moving onto the navy strength pure goodness!’

‘Pokemon. I completed my first Pokemon game, Pokemon Fire Red, only last year as a 39-year-old. Now I’m playing the best Pokemon game in years… Palworld. I used to collect the cards when I was in school, but never owned a GameBoy.’

‘It’s not exactly what you’re asking for, but I first tried smoked mussels during Covid and thought they were rank: unpleasant texture, super bland taste, literally nothing going for them at all. I was disappointed: I love shellfish and I love smoked food, so I’d hoped for much more.

‘When someone recommended I give them another go a couple of years later, it was a different story and now I love them. I guess this is obvious, but I hadn’t realised at the time how badly my sense of taste was still affected by a recent helping of The Virus.’
