Which careers that look glamorous are actually nightmares? – 17 industries that just aren’t all they’re cracked up to be

‘Stand-up comedy. It’s basically truck driving with just a little splash of comedy thrown in at the end of ridiculously long drives and/or flights.
‘I’ve been in all 50 states, and performed on 4 continents, which is nice. And mostly I just want to sleep in my own bed.
‘It costs a lot to monetize a mostly unhappy childhood.’

‘Horse breeding / care is absolutely nasty. Quit my job as a waitress in 2020 to get into this thinking it’d be better pay and fun getting to be around horses. It is better pay, but…
‘A lot of the work involves semen collection from stallions, inspecting mare genitals to see if they’re in heat, making “mare rags” (rags that mares have squirted on) to get stallions excited for artificial insemination scenarios, watching horses mate…
‘Also having to do sheath cleanings for geldings on the side 🤮 . They have tons of smegma build up in their sheaths, some of it forms into balls (called “beans”) and a human has to manually clean it out every so often.’

‘Design.
‘No matter what your mental state is, you’re expected to be creative, that too on a timeline. You need to create what the other person has in mind, without having mind reading skills.’

‘Law.
‘Most law students barely survive law school, and then get fed into firms where they are worked to the bone and then kicked out after a few years. Most don’t come out ahead financially.’

‘Film industry.
‘As an actor, as a director, as a tech, doesn’t matter. You have long hours in crappy conditions all the while you have to dodge all the shady employers trying to screw people out of money. You never know when your next job is going to come from, you’re an independent contractor so you can’t get benefits unless your local union has something set up for you. While the money can be good there’s Very little room for growth, if you’re making $37 an hour when you’re 20 you’re probably going to be making $39 an hour when you’re 50.
‘One upside though is lunch is always provided. If I switched to a normal job I would have a hard time adjusting to that.’

‘Live sound engineering. people assume its hanging out with rockstars and traveling the world. its 16 hour load in days, sleeping in a van, constant tinnitus, and getting paid less than the merch girl.’

‘Architecture. everyone pictures you designing beautiful buildings. the reality is years of compliance paperwork, arguing with contractors about why a wall needs to be where it is, and billing disputes. the creative part is maybe 5% of the job.’

‘This thread has reinforced my mindset that working in general just sucks.’
