‘What decision in your 30s had the biggest positive impact on your life?’ – 22 tips to set yourself up for the best possible future

‘I left my dead end marriage when I was 34. I’m now 37 with a husband who actually wants to be with me and didn’t just get married because he thought that’s what you did after you’d been together long enough, and we have a baby on the way. Two things I’d resigned myself to living without and now I have both.’

‘Sobriety. I was a classic grey area drinker, rarely able to keep a lid on it and slowly making myself more and more miserable and tired.

‘My partner and I quit together and it was like I’d entered a cheat code on life. Everything got better and has kept improving since. That won’t necessarily be everyone’s experience, you have to work to create a life you don’t want to destroy but stopping drinking is what got me out of my own way.’

‘Spent more time with my mum. We had a tumultuous relationship in my teens and early 20s for a number of reasons. It improved in my mid 20s, and then a few years later I made a concerted effort to visit her more and do more family stuff.

‘She died a couple of years ago, very glad to have had the time with her and it definitely impact the way I view her and our relationship now, in a hugely positive way.’

‘Rediscovering reading for fun. 20s downtime was gaming, scrolling and box set binges. I feel more engaged in the world and it feels like the pace of life has slowed by cutting screen time. Gradually improving my desecrated attention span page-by-page.’

‘Shaving my head. I had been losing my hair since my late twenties and was becoming progressively more self conscious about it. One day I just said ‘fuck it’ and took the step. The feeling of freedom and catharsis as I was doing it was indescribable. Felt like being born again.’

‘Ride 250km on a bike with no head phones, the amount of clarity being along with your self, with no distractions but the road… makes you understand who you are, what you are and review your life in depth.’

‘Training at home. Saved loads of money not paying for gym memberships and have used my own experience and knowledge to keep physically fit. It’s also kept me interested in it and not so concerned about being able to afford it.’

‘If this thread proves anything it’s how different it can be for every person (some have said not having kids, some have said having them, getting married vs being alone etc). So my advice would be to focus on what you want and not where you feel you should be.’
