Twitter 1970s nostalgia takedowns
A British nostalgia account got all misty-eyed over this 1970s ‘council estate’ and were fact checked ’til they farted

In Belfast, this wasn’t a council estate. It was where your mate from school lived whose Da was a builder or a black taxi driver and you only went over because they had Sky TV https://t.co/mzQ20tHLhN

Council estate my arse.
Those are classic Barratt houses, built for sale to the emerging lower middle class of the early 1970s.
There were very nice council estates about in the 1960s (I grew up on one), but they looked nothing like that. https://t.co/s5Mi2SvlNo— Christopher Goulding (@GouldingChris) May 11, 2026

Not sure that is a council estate. Those are Wimpey homes. Through lounge diner & only one loo. If you had a Cortina GL it went on the front of the drive. If you only had a DL you hid it down the side
Guess what WIMPEY stood for

11,
So that’s why a ‘British’ nostalgia account didn’t know that these weren’t council houses. https://t.co/cWzZRNFFmD pic.twitter.com/T87gl7uQ8p

That’s not a council estate. This is what a British council estate looked like. pic.twitter.com/QZKdKrY9y7

Astral Way in Hull. Same view in 2025. Doesn’t look like a council estate to me. According to a Hull Facebook page “that’s where the rich people lived” and “we got burgled twice” in the 1980s. pic.twitter.com/6urgIEst2C
