‘Whats a 2020 quarantine hobby that you look back and realise how depressing it was?’ – 22 ways Covid was a deeply weird time

It feels pretty unbelievable that we’re now almost six and a half years on from the first Covid lockdown. Honestly, where does the time go?

And the further away we get from it, the more surreal the whole period seems. Being forced to stay at home certainly brought out the stranger side in people.

They’ve been chatting about this on the AskReddit page after gss0789 posted this…

Whats a 2020 quarantine hobby you had that you look back and you realize how depressing it was?

And lots of people chipped in with the pastime they took up during Covid which, on reflection, was a bit of an oddity…

‘I digitised an entire cemetery on Find a Grave. Over 10000 graves. Then next time I went to New Jersey I started adding the photos. I don’t think it was depressing though. Mostly helpful.’

‘We invented a modified version of Yahtzee called ‘Shotzee’ where every time someone got a Yahtzee we all immediately got up, danced around the kitchen island singing ‘Belle of Belfast City’, then all drank a shot to ‘All I do is Win’ by DJ Khalid before returning to the game.’

‘I learned all about the invasive plants in my yard that I wasn’t aware of before. I went around the yard with clippers all the time. I got a weed whacker. I learned that despite all my work it was just going to grow back again quickly.

On the plus side, it was nice outdoor activity that felt good for my health, and I did learn a lot.’

‘I forced myself to start some productive hobbies for this exact reason. I made some (bad) art. I learned a bit of a new language. And I got really good at cooking. I have a history of depression and I was very quickly sinking into it, so I had to use some higher quality coping skills to prevent going completely off the rails.’

‘Smoking. I went from ½ pack a day to a whole pack and beyond for two reasons – boredom and having a reason to get out (buying cigs).

After 20 years, I quit in late 2022. Haven’t looked back.’
