Nigel Farage ‘thought resigning would end the Parliamentary Standards investigation’, and there’s not enough facepalm in the world – 17 top takedowns
Clacton is just days away from going to the polls in the by-election made necessary by the resignation of Nigel Farage from the job he’d barely bothered to do for two years. It’s a good thing he made a big song and dance about leaving, or nobody would have noticed he’d gone.
In fact, he’s spent more time in Clacton since resigning – costing the taxpayers a quarter of a million pounds – than he has in the past two years.
It's been an absolute honour to visit Clacton fewer times than I've visited America, hold zero surgeries and do fuck all for the town. pic.twitter.com/mfTQjYNhF5

Miraculously, the extreme peril that prevented him from holding in-person surgeries seems to have temporarily melted away, as he wanders the streets being showered with affection, rather than milkshakes.
This entire street will be sending the establishment a message on August 13th. 👊 pic.twitter.com/qVhWLSijxP

It appears, according to The Times, that the whole thing was triggered on a false premise …that the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner would permanently halt the investigation into whether Farage should have declared the five million pounds given to him by crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.
“One senior source said they believed Farage had been poorly advised over calling the by-election in Clacton. They said that “young advisers” around Farage had not checked whether the standards’ commissioner’s investigation would continue in the event of the by-election and they had incorrectly assumed it would not.”

The allegation spread across media and social media, accompanied by a chorus of facepalms and schadenfreude.

In his defence, he can’t be expected to understand the rules of the workplace he’s barely visited. It’s not a good defence, but still.

And they think they are fit to run a country 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Farage reportedly didn’t realise standards probe could restart if he wins Clacton https://t.co/oNS3rZraaQ

I thought I could end the Parliamentary Investigation while being seen to take on The Establisment. Instead, the investigation carries on after I've wasted my summer fighting a bin. pic.twitter.com/v47Nla1jPu

🔥 The most revealing line in this Times piece?
Reform insiders say Farage called the Clacton by-election after advisers wrongly assumed resigning would stop the Parliamentary Standards investigation.

‘Is there anything to be said for holding another by-election’
The best part of Farage delaying the inevitable is that it’ll solidify Clacton’s position as the stupidest town in Britain once he’s found guilty https://t.co/GGW5q0dy4O pic.twitter.com/3DpArOoPXE

Confirmation of what had previously been discussed, Farage resigned to force a by-election in Clacton because he believed it would end the Parliamentary investigation into his corruption.
Big mistake. https://t.co/S0b1COvRF2
