Somebody asked about films that have aged so terribly they’ve been ‘rendered virtually unwatchable’ – 23 mega-cringe movies we can no longer enjoy

‘The Net (1995). The idea of someone stealing your identity and basically erasing your entire existence through computers sounded like sci-fi back then. Now it feels less like a movie plot and more like something you’d see in a cybersecurity news headline.’

‘It was the best movie I had ever seen when it came out. It was an easy awards favourite – and in 1999, no less, one of the best years in movie history. It was a total phenomenon at the time, but I don’t think I will ever watch American Beauty again.’

’40 Year Old Virgin in premise. My dad said being a 40 year old virgin was not possible when the movie first came out. Now I’m like, dad I’m on my way.’

‘The original Ben-Hur from 1925 (not Ben Hur from 1907 though it has some pretty cool set design) is great and was perhaps the last big blockbuster silent film. Certainly had the largest budget of any of them.

But between the 1959 movie being such a classic and the fact they tripped and killed around 100 horses for the chariot race, I don’t really have any desire to watch it.’

‘Shallow Hal. Gwyneth in a fat suit. Couldn’t be made today. Pure cringe.’
–Ranger1484

18.

‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was pretty popular when it came out in 1955.

It’s a musical about seven brothers where six of them kidnap six woman from the town and keep them at their home all winter.’

19.

‘Rambo 2 – 5? Today’s action movies with fast hyper realistic action make old one man army movies like Rambo seem downright silly. The first one is still a classic though, because it didn’t go over the top.’
–givin_u_the_high_hat

‘Surprised no one has said Short Circuit. They cast a Jewish guy in brown face as an Indian and he went way overboard with his accent.’
–gooddaysir

21.

‘Idiocracy.

It’s a very hard watch today not because it aged bad, but because it aged like the finest, most expensive favourite wine gifted to you by your best friend, that you drink crying while remembering his early death.’
–Thatcherist_Sybil

22.

‘American Pie needs to be on this list, the livestreaming of Nadia was so inappropriate.’
–Procedure-Minimum

It will be interesting to see how many popular movies made in the past 20 years will be called ‘cringy’ by future generations. Many, I expect.’
