People shared the ‘weird but harmless stuff’ they get up to in their spare time – 25 eye-opening hobbies to make you feel normal(ish)

‘I don’t know if it’s weird, per se, but definitely not a common hobby. I collect elements from the periodic table and radioactive antiques (nothing dangerous, of course, and I take good care of them).’

‘I collect my dog’s hairs when I brush him. The project is to weave the hair into threads to make a big crocheted stuffed animal in his image. So when he dies I’ll still have a part of him with me (yes it’s weird, some people juge me when I show the amount of hairs I have already collected).’

‘I love computer mice and collect them and learn about them and write reviews on them. I’m weird.’

‘Eating ice. I bought a tray that has small holes to make small cubes so it doesn’t strain or crack my teeth. It just tastes different and the crunch is so nice. Hot water also tastes different than cold water and I drink that all the time too.’

‘Fasteners and hardware. Paperclips, staples, nuts and bolts. Fancy or special purpose hinges and fittings.’

‘After work, I often walk half an hour into the woods to cook a tin of sausage and beans on a camp stove and drink a beer.’

‘I love washing my face and carrying out my skincare routine. Sometimes I’ll put on a full face of makeup, wear it for an hour or so, and then wash it off. I realise that washing my face isn’t weird, but I think I like it more than what most people would consider ‘normal’.’

‘I have a story in my head that’s been going on since I was a teenager. It started with a trilogy I read about a young man who got swept up in an adventure spanning multiple worlds, I thought it was a great concept and started imagining how a sequel would go.

By this point the main character is several centuries old, has travelled countless fantasy worlds, both original and existing IPs, been married several times including to a Greek goddess and is essentially The Doctor if he was a planes-walking sorcerer instead of a time-travelling alien.’

‘I find petrol stations (gas stations) oddly soothing. I’ll pull in, get a chocolate bar, eat it in my car. People are coming and going, usually spending the minimum time there. But I like to observe it. And sometimes get a car wash. I’m in Europe but I’d love to see the fabled Bucees one day. It’s weird, but harmless!’

‘I collect and wear sea otter socks every day. Different pairs, always sea otters. Every. Day.’

‘Everytime I boil the kettle to make a coffee or tea I open the lid and just let the steam hit my face for a full minute. It feels great and I feel like there’s some benefit right?

Also, I’m British so I’m drinking like 10 cups of tea a day, so this happens a lot.’

‘I collect ‘creepy’ dolls. I don’t think they’re creepy (I think they’re lovely and interesting), but I’ve had people straight up refuse to enter my room because of my collection of porcelain dolls, ventriloquist dummies, and marionettes.’

‘I pretend I’m a budgie on Facebook and I have almost 500 followers. I tell them all about ‘my’ day with my flock mates and the trouble we get into. I really do have birds.

I started this around 2020 as an antidote to all the scary things out there and it’s been so amazing. So many people say I cheer them up with my stories and pictures. It helps when things are dark.’
