People of a certain age have been sharing the younger generation’s slang terms they’ve totally taken to heart – 15 go-to phrases that aren’t actually that cringe

Kids these days. AMIRITE?

They’re always saying the darnedest things. And it’s almost impossible to understand them because they’re using so many new slang terms it’s like they’ve reinvented language.

To get to the bottom of the matter, Redditor u/RainyDaysAndMondays3 asked:

‘Older people using newer slang or phrases, your favourite newer word?’

Lucky for everyone following along at home, Reddit was answersmaxxing and yeeted until you’ll say ‘bruh.’

(Am I doing this right?)

1.
“‘Yeet’ – it’s as satisfying to say that I yeeted something as it is to actually throw/yeet the item itself.”

2.
“I love it when my very masculine & sweet octogenarian father talks about ‘self care.'”
Snugglette

3.
“Bruh. BUUUUHHHRRRRRRUUUUHHHHH! Drawn out or short, I’ve bruh’d my husband, child and my boss. Perfect word. Has lowered my usage of, ‘dude’ by 60%.”
QueeefLatifah

4.
“Gen X here and I love ‘catching strays’ – as in, casually insulting someone while actually talking about someone else. Also ‘it’s giving’ and ‘serving.’”

5.
“Rizz is absolutely used to annoy my younger coworkers lol. Make sure they get a little cringe in their life.”

7.
“Slaps, ie this insert thing slaps. I’m in my fifties.”

8.
“‘Sus’ is the best. Fills a niche that ‘sketchy’ and ‘suspicious’ don’t quite cover.”
JoyousZephyr

9.
“I’ve been unconsciously using ‘low key obsessed’ to describe things I like. Im 45.’
mightymaxx

10.
“I add ‘maxing’ to everything.

‘Whatcha doin mom?’

‘Dishmaxxing.'”
Boochiecoo

11.
“Does ‘touch grass’ count? I used it to get my kid off of his screen and he actually did it! 10/10 recommend.”
MutterMutterMuppet

12.
“I’m never gonna stop saying ‘based.’ You can’t make me.”
thingsbetw1xt

13.
“I love calling my male friends ‘king.'”
beautitan

“And male pets. They are the ‘fur-maxxing short kings.'”
Boochiecoo

14.
“I’m old Gen-X and I teach 8th grade. I LOVE being old enough and corny enough I can throw their slang back at them and get a reaction. Laughs, groans, cringe; don’t care. I earn it. ‘Slaps,’ ‘Lit,’ and ‘Fire’ are my current go-tos. I told a kid today he GOATED his test and I got big noise from the room.”

15.
“I used to absolutely hate ‘crashing out’… to me that means sleeping. We had the perfectly good phrase, ‘freaking out,’ it didn’t need a synonym.

“But now I’ve caught myself saying it on a couple occasions… Send help! I’m crashing out!”
