Someone asked about ‘the most underrated tourist attractions in the UK’ – 23 beneath-the-radar brilliant days out

‘I was blown away at Worcester cathedral being shown the 1225 Magna Carta with no one else there… just me and the lady showing it.’

‘For London both the Hunterian Museum and Grant Museum of Zoology are waaaay more interesting than the proper big Natural History Museum in South Kensington, and barely anyone knows about ’em.

Nowhere near as child-friendly, of course, but public collections positively stuffed with intriguing, weird, and wonderful specimens, and not just a whole loada interactive displays and models. Go see the pickled embryos!’

‘Eden Camp – WW2 Prisoner of War Camp near Malton in North Yorkshire

Crich – the National Tram Museum and Historic village.

The National Coal Mining Museum – at Caphouse Colliery near Wakefield.’

‘Tring museum – it’s the Natural History Museum’s baby brother.’

‘It’s not a “day trip from London” but you should check out John Soane’s Museum, it’s full of weirdness. Don’t look at any pictures before you go.’
–Leucurus

18.

‘Depending on how far you’re willing to travel, there’s the rather ironically named Scotland’s Secret Bunker near St Andrew’s. If you’re interested in history, I can highly recommend the castle in St Andrews as well. You can access the mine and counter-mine dug during a siege in 1546-7.’

‘Derwent Pencil Museum – Lake District. Went for the novelty of it, and was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was.’

20.

‘My partner and I went to Trentham Monkey Forest, it was amazing! It’s not a zoo, it’s monkeys living in a large enclosed forest.

You should keep a respectful distance, but the monkeys may get close of their own accord. We went in June and saw a lot of baby monkeys being carried around by their mothers.

If you like monkeys, it’s a good day out.’

‘Alnwick gardens. The poison garden tour is great and the whole gardens are excellent, really worth a visit. Don’t do what I did and book the gardens and castle on the same day. The gardens easily need a full day.’

22.

‘The Royal Navy Museum in Hartlepool is terrific. Worth the entry for the HMS Trincomalee alone, but there’s loads of other stuff to see and do.’

23.

‘Glasgow Riverside (transport) Museum is fantastic given that it’s free. The London Transport Museum is about £25 per head so Glasgow having a totally free one is brilliant.’
