5 favourite takedowns of the Brexiteer who said we didn’t need academics to win WW2
In a world full of worrying tendencies, the speed with which some people are happy to dismiss the opinions of experts, academics and scientists – basically, people with brains far bigger than ours – is definitely one of them.
We only mention this after a Brexiteer called Stanley White – in a tweet that’s since been deleted – bemoaned ‘remoaners [who] keep going on about academics and scientists’.
And if he was expecting a response, he definitely got one. Just not, presumably, the one he was expecting.
Here are our 5 favourites.
Dear Stanley,
This is an enigma machine.
It created German codes.
It was impossible to crack.
A bunch of British scientists, led by a gay man from Manchester, cracked it.
Their work saved 14 million lives and shortened the war by 2 years.
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. pic.twitter.com/0qhVqlRerA— Brexit Bin 🇪🇺 🇬🇧 #FBPE #RevokeRemain (@BrexitBin) August 12, 2019
Barnes Wallis.
Alan Turing.
Look them up.— 🎃John Rain CBE🎃 (@MrKenShabby) August 12, 2019
Yeah – fuck Barnes Wallis with a great big bouncing bomb.

You fought in the war did you, Stanley? Plenty of academics and scientists did, so they were both experts and heroes. You are neither, I suspect.

In less than 1 minute I came up with:
Watson Watt, Wilkens & Bowen – radar
RJ Mitchell – Spitfire
Harry Hawker – Hurricane
Barns Wallis – bouncing bomb
Alan Turing – Enigma Code
Tommy Flowers – Lorenz CodeSorry Stanley but that was a very stupid tweet

In short …
Turing…enigma? Those who designed the planes, tanks, weapons, kit? Strategised?
This tweet goes in the “reasons why we should consider ending democracy” pile.
