World Book Day is a great opportunity to plan a costume weeks in advance, carefully prepare all the elements, then scrap it and come up with an entirely different costume in ten minutes because your kid decided at the last minute that they were too embarrassed to wear the first costume

Small panic we hadn’t sorted a costume for world book day, but thankfully our school doesn’t want to do outfits.
Which is good as right now I’d be putting the kids in scrubs and saying they’ve gone as the Oxford Handbook of Medicine

Happy world book day! As ever I'll be dressed as the narrator from my semi autobiographical novel

Jealous of people without kids, who will never know the horrifying panic of realising it's World Book Day this week. You lucky fucks.

It’s reassuring to see much loved literary character Ronaldo being represented so well on World Book Day.

When I become a successful children’s book author all my brilliant dynamic fantastic engaging characters will have entirely mediocre and banal clothes because frankly parents & teachers don’t need that much panic last thing before World Book Day

Tips to avoid making an elaborate costume for your kid on #WorldBookDay:
– Make them only read books about kids at school who wear the same school uniform as they do at their school
– Insist their fave book is the Invisible Man by HG Wells and then keep them at home for the day.— Tiernan Douieb (@tiernandouieb.bsky.social) March 6, 2025 at 9:08 AM
A final thought …
If parents spent the same time and effort buying and getting their kids to read books as they do on World Book Day costumes, it would be a big step forward.
