’50 year old corporate veteran here. To keep a job* you have to have at least two of three qualities:
‘Easy to work with
‘Reliable
‘Excellent at your actual tasks
‘Figure out which two you can consistently deliver and do that. You can be a bit rubbish at your actual tasks…. But if you are always guaranteed to be there, making an effort and being pleasant to be around, then you’ll survive. If you are technically excellent, consistently delivering but a bit of a dick… you’ll survive. If you’re a bit of a dick, flaky but technically excellent… watch out.
‘(* to be clear – the biggest risk to anyone’s job is that the CEO needs to save £1M to get their bonus… then you’re just reduced to a salary line on a spreadsheet, marked for a layoff)’ -yearsofpractice
