Entertainment Harry Potter the UK
A £430m energy project had to be diverted because Harry Potter fans were upset it would pass through the ‘grave’ of a fictional elf, and people don’t know whether to laugh or cry
Here’s one that’s going straight into the ‘you couldn’t make it up’ files.
It’s come out that a major £430m energy project in Pembrokeshire, Wales, building an interconnector to carry solar and wind power between Ireland and the UK was rerouted – because Harry Potter fans complained the original plans would cut through the “grave” of the series’ fictional elf, Dobby.
Ah, Britain. Never change.

Per the Metro, the project’s former director, Simon Ludlam, said his team received ‘hundreds’ of calls from outraged Harry Potter fans after he spoke about the pipeline on BBC Wales. The team then decided to reroute the project, so as not to disturb the “grave” of Dobby, who died in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
As you might imagine, there has been a strong reaction to the revelations.
I had to check this was true… this is beyond ridiculous

They rerouted a massive £500m interconnector cable, and I can’t believe I am typing this, to avoid the fictional grave of Dobby the House Elf. https://t.co/nWXoG9tRbi

They should have exhumed Dobby’s grave, had him drawn and quartered and then burned https://t.co/tMadDmUGJJ

Though, the counter-argument is that it’s a popular tourist site and important to the local economy.
I’m curious about how much it actually cost to change the route. Dobby’s Grave seems to be a pretty popular tourist destination – 75,000 visitors a year according to the BBC, and lots of existing social media content about it. Seems good to preserve it if you can do so cheaply. https://t.co/tIr19hVLDm pic.twitter.com/Zl81ng9XKL

Either way, the good news is fictional Dobby’s fictional grave survives. And now we must go lie down in a dark room for an hour.
